Saddle size — usually called seat size — is measured in inches from the saddle nail at the side of the pommel to the centre of the cantle. It's primarily about fitting the rider, although very small and very large saddles also need to suit the horse's back length.

UK English saddles are most commonly sold in seat sizes from 14.5" up to 18.5".

  • 14.5" — first-ridden and lead-rein riders on small ponies
  • 15" to 15.5" — children and very petite adults, usually on ponies
  • 16" to 16.5" — teenage riders and smaller adults on a wide range of horses
  • 17" — the most common adult size, suits average-build adult riders
  • 17.5" — taller or longer-thighed adults, common on larger sport horses
  • 18" to 18.5" — tall, heavier or longer-legged adult riders

Sizing varies between brands, models and disciplines. A 17" dressage saddle and a 17" jump saddle will not fit you identically because the seat shape, twist and flap position are different, and the same nominal inch can ride a little smaller or larger between brands.
